It's not easy making something up on the spot, not to mention, trying to continue thinking of more things to say as you go - listening to your partner and focusing on being in the moment (the scene) will help you react in a more confident way.
Improv incorporates many skills that are fundamental to delivering a good performance as an actor, it can improve your self-confidence, which is very rewarding and more enjoyable.
No matter how much you prepare for an audition, there are always moments on the set when the casting director decides to change things up a bit, which can get very uncomfortable for some actors - this is where an improv class can really help you.
*Once you've mastered the Art of making things up on the spot ... unscripted storytelling can be loads of fun!
IMPROV is never-ending ... there is always something new to discover each time. We begin with ensemble building games, then present actions through monologues and scene study and one liners.
The most basic ground rule is, there is no right or wrong. Something that inhibits a lot of students is the worry that they are somehow doing something wrong. Improv is about going with your impulses and creating something from them. There are some rules we will cover in class that can make improv easier.
Rules of Improv and How They Relate TO Being Supportive Of Your Fellow Actor
Act 1: The first rule of improvisation is AGREE. Always agree and say "yes."
Act 2: The second rule of improvisation is not only to say YES, but YES, AND....
Act 3: The third rule is MAKE STATEMENTS.
Act 4: There are NO MISTAKES, only opportunities.
Fundamental Improv Rules *Denial is the number one reason most scenes go bad. DON'T DENY. *Don't ask open ended Questions. *You don't have to always be funny ... :) *Tell a story.*
