Ahhh, the essence of acting ~
The word Pantomime was adopted from the Latin word Pantomimus ... (panto-) meaning "all" and (mimos), meaning a dancer who acted all of the roles, or all the story. By not using words, it becomes show, not tell; this is the essence of acting ~ showing.
When pantomiming, there are a few things to keep in mind ~
1. Exaggerate facial expressions.
2. Keep each motion precise.
3. Keep your scenes entertaining.
4. Don't talk.
We start with simple actions; For example: Tying your shoes, checking your phone messages, riding a bike, brushing your teeth, folding laundry, making a bowl of cereal, or a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, walking a dog, dancing, lip syncing, etc. too many to list, but you get the gist of it ... these actions do not need words, only body language. When you wave at someone, you're either saying hello or goodbye, no words are needed ~ welcome to the world of Pantomiming!
A great phrase to remember in acting or in every day life is, "actions speak louder than words." Showing your emotions through body language is like taking a journey to a whole other world. The art of Pantomiming has been around for decades.
*Your body language speaks volumes without even saying a word.
Communication through showing, is powerful! Someone can say the words, "I love you" all day long, but if there are no actions to back it up, then they are just words without a lot of meaning. What would happen if you were watching a live performance, with only words? You would probably walk right over to the ticket booth and request a refund.
***Actions make any scene more powerful, you become a moving spirit, which is very necessary in acting.
Pantomime is essentially "the art of silence."
